If you're flying with Ryanair here's everything you need to know about carry-on hand luggage size and weight.

Firstly, be warned. Rival airlines Easyjet, Norwegian and Wizz Air allow one (1) piece of free carry-on hand luggage in the cabin. Not Ryanair !  Since the 1 November 2018 Ryanair's hand luggage policy changed and is now one of the most restrictive in Europe. Read the following and you won't get caught out having to pay an extra €/£ 50 charge at the boarding gate. 

What is the maximum size hand luggage with Ryanair if Priority boarding

Only Priority boarding passengers can take into the cabin for free one (1) small personal bag (dimensions 40x20x25cm), plus one (1) larger cabin bag (55x40x20cm) with a maximum weight allowance of 10 kg. The second bag costs an extra £6-20. Crucially, the small personal bag must fit under the seat in front. 

For space reasons, Ryanair cap Priority Boarding & 2 Cabin Bags to a maximum of 95 passengers out of 189 per flight so book early.

What is the maximum size hand luggage with Ryanair if Non-Priority boarding

Non-Priority boarding passengers, however, can only bring into the cabin for free one (1) small personal bag (40x20x25 cm), which must fit under the seat in front. Before you head out to the plane, Ryanair will check and your bag must fit into the small bag Sizer. 

If you are a non-priority boarding customer and you want to bring a second larger bag (55x40x20 cm) weighing up to a maximum of 10 kg, you can buy online beforehand at the time of ticket purchase or during check-in (between 2 - 48 hours prior) using the Ryanair App at a much lower cost. If you purchase last minute at the airport check-in staff will charge you a much higher price. 

So each Ryanair passenger (excluding infants) whether priority or non-priority boarding is permitted to carry free of charge one (1) small piece of cabin baggage on board, which should not weigh more than 10 kg and not exceed the maximum dimensions of 40x25x20cm.  Crucially, it must fit under the seat in front. 

Priority boarding passengers, additionally, can also bring into the cabin a second larger 10 kg wheelie bag with maximum dimensions 55x40x20cm.

What is Ryanair hand luggage excess charges

If your cabin luggage weighs more than 10 kg (or 20 kg depending on what you booked) excess baggage weight will be charged at £11 per kilo, which incidentally is cheaper than Easyjet who charge £12 per kilo. 

You may purchase excess baggage up to a maximum of 32 kg at the airport ticket desk. 

Once you check-in for your flight, clear security and then purchase duty free in the terminal, your duty-free bags are permitted in the cabin in addition to your cabin luggage. A baby changing bag up to 5 kg is also permitted. 

At the boarding gate, oversized baggage is placed in the hold of the plane for a fee of €/£ 50.
